About the Certification

This powerlifting certification will introduce, educate and coach any trainee whose goal is to increase maximum strength with an applied science approach, using powerlifting movements and training methodologies for developing an individualized and optimized strength training program.

The program was created by Tom DeLong, MA, RSCC*D, CSCS*D, who is the Director of Science Education for the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT) and the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA). He is a 35+ year veteran of the Strength and Conditioning/Personal Training industry holding a Master's degree in Kinesiology from California State University of Long Beach (specializing in biomechanics of resistance training and program design) and a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and Wellness from Ball State University.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): 1.9 units.

What Can You Expect To Learn?

  • The three foundational movements for humans (squat, bench, deadlift) which are effective in building a substantial foundation of strength for everyday activities
  • Basics of structure and function (how the body is put together and how it works)
  • Rigid-body mechanics (the physics of movement i.e. biomechanics: external and internal forces; statics and dynamics [kinetic and kinematics])
  • Exercise physiology (how stresses affect and change the body i.e. adaptations)
  • Energy systems
  • Basic movement evaluations to identify movement deficits that may cause injury
  • Exercise Techniques
  • How to create an "individualized" program (plan) for developing the trainee based on their individual needs

The Certified Powerlifting Instructor Course includes:

  • Certified Powerlifting Instructor Manual (PDF file)
  • Final Exam
  • The National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (1.9 CEUs)
  • Sample Test and Study Guide are not included (They may be purchased separately.)

Exam Information

  • This exam is given via a live proctor through www.passmyexam.net. Proctor fee paid at time of scheduling.
  • You will have 6 months to take your exam, after which a late fee will apply.
  • A government photo ID and a valid CPR card are required.
  • You will be given 120 minutes to take the 120 question exam.
  • You must score a 75% or higher to pass
  • Retake exams must be purchased separately.

About the Author

Tom DeLong

Tom DeLong, MA, RSCC*D, CSCS*D, is the Director of Science Education for the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT) and the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA). He is a 35+ year veteran of the Strength and Conditioning/Personal Training industry holding a Master's degree in Kinesiology from California State University of Long Beach (specializing in biomechanics of resistance training and program design) and a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and Wellness from Ball State University. His teaching experience includes UCLA Extension (11 years), California Lutheran University (7 years), Wexford University (2 years), CSULB (1 year), and currently holds a teaching position at the United States Sports Academy (USSA) teaching Sport Biomechanics in Thailand and Malaysia. He is also an adjunct professor at the Keilir Institute (Atlantic Center of Excellence) where he teaches Biomechanics and Assessment Protocols. Additionally he has competed in powerlifting since 1979 and has been a professional strength and conditioning coach at several universities.
